Did you know that Alice, from ‘Alice’s adventures in Wonderland’ was from Oxford?
Alice Liddell was the daughter of the Dean at Christ Church, who was a friend of Charles Dogson (pen-name – Lewis Carroll), who taught mathematics at the Christ Church College. Dogdon spent a lot of time with Alice and her siblings, which inspired him for writing the books. Many locations in Alice’s adventures are based on parts of the college.
Just opposite the Christ Church College, in 83 St Aldates, there is still a shop where Alice with her older friend used to buy sweets. This shop is now called ‘Alice’s Shop’, which also appears in the second book about Alice ‘Through looking glasses’ as the Old Sheep Shop’.
