Foraging Mushrooms in Oxfordshire

…or a story about how I found a lawn of mushroom gold (porcini!) 20 mins drive from Oxford

My grandad used to say that mushroom foraging is in our blood. I remember waking up at dusk and going deep into the forest, to some known places, where we’re hoping to get the best and the most mushrooms. We would have special baskets, and a pen-knife, and we taught since childhood which ones are safe to eat and which ones aren’t. The big prize would always be to find a good looking porcini or a large plain filled with chanterelles.

The Handle Bar Oxford – Meal for 2 for £21

First time I came across The Handle Bar cafe was when my friend Krista took me there for a brunch. I must admit, until that moment, I wasn’t even aware of its existence, but what a great find it was! I immediately loved the atmosphere, and my brunch was absolutely outstanding. I’ve been there a couple more times, but always for lunch or a cuppa; to be perfectly honest I didn’t even realise that they do dinner service!

I am forever on a hunt for a bargain – especially when it comes to meals out, as more often than not you end up spending your weekly supermarket budget on just one meal in a restaurant.

Living in Oxford, which is considered the most unaffordable city in the UK, it can be quite tricky to both manage your finances, whilst enjoying eating out.
